This compact project is nestled in a modest alley in Ho Chi Minh City. In a densely populated neighborhood where high-rises overshadow the low-rise fabric, we met with the homeowners to discuss their vision for a home.

The design challenge was both demanding and inspiring. Despite its small footprint, the house needed to accommodate a family of five, including a newborn, while also incorporating two rental units on the upper floors. Our goal was to ensure privacy between the living quarters and rental spaces while maximizing natural light and ventilation.

To achieve this, we introduced staggered balconies that filter daylight into the interiors while shielding them from direct views of neighboring buildings. These shifts in form also create vaulted ceilings that channel soft, indirect light and define each level. We highlighted these ceilings with glossy green tiles, contrasting against the rough white plaster walls and raw concrete sun-shading fins on the façade.

The house is structured around two staircases. The main front stair provides independent access to the rental units, ensuring privacy for the owners. To enhance ventilation, we designed a concrete screen with curved horizontal slats, which blocks rain while allowing airflow. This motif echoes the curved balcony ceilings nearby.

Inside the family’s living space, the ground floor houses the living room and kitchen, with a slender steel staircase leading to the mezzanine. This level is fully utilized with built-in bunk beds and a study area below. Sliding wooden doors allow flexibility, opening up or closing off spaces as needed.

Given the compact footprint and dense surroundings, greenery was thoughtfully integrated at the entrance, balconies, and a narrow opening behind the kitchen. These pockets of plants soften the built environment while maintaining privacy.
